My Start in Music
Music in Berlin
Growing up in divided West Berlin, Germany, my environment and cultural upbringing was shaped by a time when the country was grappling with recovering from and coming to terms with a difficult past and searching for new ways to embrace peace and democracy.
For my parents, who were passionate advocates for the arts, it was important that their children have a strong education in culture and the arts. I began my music education with percussion-based music appreciation lessons at age four. By six, I had begun classical piano training.

My Qualifications
Education
In 1984, I began my longest uninterrupted piano training with American concert pianist Catherine Framm, a former student of Julian White in Berkeley (CA) and Klaus Billing in Berlin. On her recommendation, I spent half a year in Berkeley, California studying with Julian White (M.M. Julliard).
Driven by my interest in the musical avant-garde, which was flourishing in West-Berlin, I decided to pursue a master’s degree in musicology at the Technische Universität Berlin under the tutelage of de la Motte-Haber. I eventually earned a PhD in 1999 with a thesis on American composer George Antheil and his innovative work, Ballet Mécanique.
My Savannah Studio
Teaching in Georgia
After moving to Southeast Georgia with my husband, I have taught at several institutions, including Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Atlantic University, and SCAD.
Although my music education was by no means focused solely on the piano, studying and teaching piano to students, younger and older, has become a vocation and life passion. I have taught in my home studio since 1989.
